The router sits in between your Internet connection and your local network.
But you can’t connect directly to the Internet with just a router.
Instead, your router must be plugged into a device that can transmit your digital traffic over whatever type of Internet connection you have.
And that device is a modem.
Can you get Internet with just a router?
Both a WiFi connection and an ethernet cable allow your device to connect to your router and create a local network. If the router is connected to the internet (by paying for service from an internet provider) then all the wired and wifi devices on the router will have internet.
Can you use a WiFi router without Internet?
Most wireless routers require you to plug the Internet into the wireless router, then the wireless router into the server. You can go wireless without having a modem in place. The WAN connection, which is where you would normally connect to a cable or DSL modem, can plug into the existing network that is in place.
Do you need both a router and modem?
Note: A Wifi point is a router. To use a Wifi point, you will need to connect it to a modem with an Ethernet cable. This can be a standalone modem or a modem+router combination provided by your ISP. Keep in mind, some apartment buildings and dorms don’t require modems for broadband connections.
